SAEs in World War I: A Fraternity Dedicated to Service
SAE Servicemen
A key part of Sigma Alpha Epsilon’s mission is to provide young men with the leadership and service experiences needed to excel beyond college campuses. The Fraternity’s commitment to service was highly evident during World War I, when approximately eight thousand brothers joined the call to arms. More than one hundred and fifty of those men died.
Fraternity leader Billy Levere traveled to Europe with the YMCA to help support the troops. He also meticulously compiled the service records of SAE service members for the benefit of future generations.
This exhibit, which includes letters and excerpts from Levere’s scrapbooks, as well as numerous, inscribed photographs taken during World War I, highlights, a century later, SAE’s deep involvement in the war.
